Film: Sunscreen Serenade, The Bentfootes, Grasshopper, A South Bronx Tale, Dream Girl, On the Road with Judas, Gallery Sunscreen Serenade ![]() Sunscreen Serenade pays homage to great dance film techniques of the 1930's, translating the Hollywood soundstage to a "microfilm" video environment. The subject, the ozone layer, is presented as a Depression-era musical where the audience is invited in on a joke that evokes the larger-than-life scale of a movie musical while simultaneously communicating the truly mini cast and scope of the film. Performers "disappear" against a black-draped background spotlighting paper cut-out chorus-girl torsos in a variety of scanty costumes. Fingers become legs doing knee slides, marching formations, and flirtatious, military-precise kicks. "Dolly" shots, zooms, and "boom" shots reference and showcase the signature camerawork of a Busby Berkeley number. Sunscreen Serenade was created through the support of an EMPAC DANCE MOViES Commission 2008, supported by The Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts - Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA.
